Vedia's Story

Vedia B. Mohammed was born on January 31, 1960 in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. Daughter of Bissondaye & Basdeo Singh. The youngest of nine brothers and sisters starting with the oldest Dolly Sooklal, Dulsie Hosein, Bosie Basdeosingh, all of whom reside in Trinidad & Tobago, Gully Sohun residing in Connecticut, Hazel Basdeosingh, Sheila Ganness both residing in Brooklyn New York, Mansingh Basdeosingh who resides in Trinidad & Tobago, Channan Basdeosingh residing in Canada and finally Vedia Mohammed.

Before Vedia was born her father was murdered leaving Mrs. Basdeosingh a single parent raising nine children. The eldest son Bosie often stepped in as a father figure as Vedia often recalled in her later life. He would reward and punish her as a father would do to a daughter. One of her fondest memories as a child was coming home after school; as the rule was to come directly home from school.

One day her friend convinced her otherwise as to follow her to get a whole watermelon. Poor and excited for that watermelon she taught; the rules quickly escaped her mind as she whisked away with her friend to fetch that watermelon. Worried and angry Bosie awaited Vedia at home only to find her skipping happily with a whole watermelon she struggled to carry home.

Upon first contact she was scolded and whipped for disobeying the rules of the house. Confused and angry the watermelon went to waste as it hit the ground and smashed into little pieces. Later in life she understood that lesson as she had children of her own and would try to reiterate that story to them as she tried to lovingly teach them.

Vedia Besdeosigh became Vedia B. Mohammed on December 7th, 1979...
As time progressed and Vedia got older, she started to become interested in finding a career in the legal system. She attended Trinizuela Secretarial College of the West Indies where she acquired her associates degrees; shorty after graduating she started working for a magistrate.

Upon finishing school Vedia Besdeosigh became Vedia B. Mohammed on December 7th, 1979 when she married Afzall Mohammed. A year later she had a daughter named Michelle but unfortunately passed away shortly after birth due to Yellow Jaundice.

It wasn't until two year later that they had a son on October 21, 1982 by the name of Dillon and three years followed had a daughter by the name of Safia. A name she adored and dreamt of naming her daughter; meaning "Pure" in Arabic; fortunately, her dream came true on March 30th,1985.

In the Fall of 1985 after her last child was born she ventured to the United States of America leaving behind her children to begin to prep a future for them. A painful choice she felt destined to make in order to build a solid foundation and future for her two children. Those Sacrifices proved to be well worth it in the in summer of 1990 when she was reunited with her two children.

Upon returning to New York, Vedia started to attend the Professional Career Development Institute. She gained more knowledge and insight on a career choice where she felt both excited and passionate about which was working with children. Already having two she had an upper hand on how kids think, behave and act.

In her career as a Nanny Vedia has travel to many different countries to work with families in need of her expertise. Traveling locally from Washington DC, Connecticut, New York & Florida to international European countries such as Italy, France & London. As well as countries such as Australia & Spain. Vedia always valued her profession and cared deeply for all the clients she has worked with.

Although Vedia loved working with children, her greatest passion was her family. Work that was never ending but she felt was her greatest reason in life for getting up each day. She would often relay to them how important they were to her not only through words but actions as well.

On June 3rd, 2010 Vedia came home with a giant smile on her face to see her son in her kitchen for his normal visit on Thursdays cooking stuff shells and her favorite mixed green salad. Disappointed that her daughter couldn't make it due to a deadline driven presentation she needed to finish; Vedia and her son had a quiet dinner together as her son dived into his favorite raspberry swirl cupcake she bought for dessert from crumbs. After dinner they sat on the couch as they had their weekly meeting talking about everything from life, work & love.

Vedia replied with her favorite quote...
"The plan that God has, no man can take away."
After he then pack his backpack as she sent him off with a jar of marinara sauce for his dinner later in the week, an extra raspberry swirl cupcake as she knew how much he loved it and how greedy he can be at time. Something she acknowledged and grew to love. In addition, he was sent off with a tube of toothpaste, a can of beans, a block of pepper-jack cheese and a hug and kiss to go.

On his way out, he offered to take out the trash. She quickly replied that he should just leave it; as his father could take it down when he got home. He replied with a joke "all these years I lived at home and never did my chorus, ma, just happily accept my offer" as he took down the garbage and told her "I love You" as she replied "love you too and call me when you reach home" as only a Trinidadian woman would say.

The Following day Vedia made plans to meet with her daughter Safia in the morning before she left for work to give her some of the dinner that she missed the night before and deliver her cupcake. Safia still recouping from her long day before called her mom and declined on meeting that morning as she was still tired and needed more time getting ready for work herself. Vedia insisted that Safia meet her before she left for Connecticut.

Grumpy but obedient Safia quickly got herself together as she met with her mom in the train station terminal where their meeting was filled with a laughing Vedia as her daughter looked on still in her grumpy state. Vedia asked her how her event went as they started to talk and touch base.

They talked about everything; as Safia started to tease her as to why did she poke her on Facebook; a social networking application Vedia was now starting to learn about. She replied, "because the computer told me to." They talked about her projects with the intern’s graduation and any problems that was on her plate that week. Vedia replied as her favorite quote was "The plan that God has, no man can take away."

Plans were then made to have brunch on Sunday when she returned from Connecticut. As the train arrived they both boarded as the train took off. More laughter and stories were shared in the short train ride into the city as Vedia’s 9th Street stop arrived. Quick hugs and I love yous were exchanged as Vedia exited the train.

On June 5th, 2010 Vedia awoke to a morning filled with laughter and sun in Connecticut with the family she was working with at the time. Unfortunately, it was one of her last as she had a severe asthma attack along with heart problems that combined into a breathing complication that even her inhaler pumps couldn't solve.

She was rushed to Milford Hospital and then transferred to Danbury Hospital for better treatment. Upon hearing the news, her immediate family rushed by her side, hopeful that this would be nothing but a harmless hospital visit.

After a full week in ICU; the doctors all announced that there wasn't anything that could be done; due to the amount of time that oxygen that wasn't supplied to her brain the damage was irreversible. On June 10th, 2010 her family decided to take her off her breathing machine and Vedia passed away at 8:16pm with all her family and relatives by her side.

Although Vedia is no longer here in flesh her family believes she is still here in spirit as they will keep her memory alive. They will continue living and fighting for everything she has taught them and instilled in them as valued human being that were loved unconditionally not only by God but also by their mother.
